Red Bluff...Day One

Said goodbye to Donna's sister and brother-in-law before heading to Red Bluff, Ca.

First thing we do in Red Bluff was to have dinner at the Len and Bonnie Kieley's house. Len and Bonnie moved here 25 years ago after a career in the casino business...which is where our friendship was formed.

Len has done nearly all the landscaping which included my favorite, a koi pond.

Years ago we stopped at the Red Bluff fish counting station on the Sacramento River to view the television cameras keeping track of the salmon.

We were surprised to learn that the federal government laid down the law to the farmers. These large gates were used to block the Sacramento flow and force it into canals for agriculture. Because of this system the salmon have suffered  a large decline in population.

As of this year, 2012...these gates will never be closed again allowing the migrating fish free access up and down the mighty Sacramento River. Now the state and feds are only allowed to use these rotating fish weirs to estimate the down stream fry and returning Chinook salmon count.
