Historical markers.

After years of blowing past these markers, Donna and I promised ourselves to stop at as many as possible.
This marker tells the story of baby Charles, whose parents were Jewish. Baby Charles died in December of 1864 in Red Bluff but is buried here in the town of Shasta 60 miles away.

Baby Charles's parents brought the body all the way to Shasta, a long and difficult journey in the winter of 1864, because this was the closest Jewish cemetery to them. It's just a short walk from Hwy 299 to the grave.

Donna thought the parents must of really loved little Charles to go to such hardship in order to find a place of rest for their baby.

I find it rewarding in this day and age that not only is the grave site unmolested, but people still bring toys and stuffed animals for little Charles.

Now comes the interesting part to me. Concern for little Charles caused the state to reroute Hwy 299 in 1923...? would you believe in this day and age the government reroute a freeway just for a old grave site, not on your life. Good for the people in 1923!

Here is Hwy 299 going around the site.
